Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney caps throughout Marietta, and most cap replacements run between $285 and $540 installed, including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. If your Copperfield cap is rusted through, missing its mesh, or has blown off entirely during one of our Cobb County storms, we can usually get it replaced the same week. The typical discovery is a homeowner spotting rust streaks down the chimney chase, hearing rain ping against the flue damper, or finding a squirrel that decided the open flue looked like a condo.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes a range of chimney caps across several lines, including their standard single-flue caps, multi-flue caps, and the decorative copper-topped series that ages from bright penny to dark bronze over the first two years. The most common units we see in Marietta are the single-flue models with expanded galvanized mesh and a solid copper or stainless steel lid.
Identification matters more than you would think. Copperfield stamps their caps on the underside of the lid or collar with a model number, but after eight or nine Georgia summers, that stamp is usually sun-faded or covered in creosote dust. The reliable method is measurement: inside flue tile dimension first, outside flue tile dimension second, and the clearance from the top of the flue tile to the crown. We carry Copperfield caps to fit flue tiles from 8″×8″ through 13″×13″, which covers most Marietta homes built from the 1960s through the 2000s.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Copperfield caps sized for a terra cotta flue tile are not a direct fit on a round metal liner. If your chimney has been relined with a stainless liner, the cap needs a round adapter collar or a liner-top plate. We see this mismatch frequently when homeowners order a cap online based on the old tile size, then find it rattling loose on the liner. We carry both configurations.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust bleeding down the chimney chase or crown. The original galvanized steel base has its limitations in Georgia humidity and acid rain. Once the galvanizing layer is compromised, the base rusts and stains the masonry below. This is the earliest visible sign, often months before the cap actually fails.
- Mesh screens torn or missing. The expanded metal mesh is what keeps animals out. Older Copperfield caps used lighter-gauge mesh that squirrels can chew through in a single afternoon. Once there is a gap, they come back and bring the family.
- Wind-driven rain inside the firebox. If you hear water hitting the damper during heavy rain, the lid has likely shifted or the cap has come off entirely. This is the wet symptom that sends people to the phone.
- Smoke drafting back into the living room. A cap that has collapsed or tilted can actually restrict the flue opening rather than protect it. If your fireplace was drafting fine last season and is suddenly smoky, the cap is a prime suspect.
- Cap is simply gone. Between a strong storm, a rotted mounting bolt, and a couple of decades of weather, caps do fly off. If you can see the open flue from the ground on a chimney that used to have a cap, that’s the cap failure, plain as day.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Copperfield chimney cap installation in Marietta typically runs between $285 and $540. At the low end, you’re replacing a small single-flue cap on a clean flue with easy roof access. At the higher end, it’s a larger multi-flue cap or a cap that needs a custom mounting plate because the crown is cracked or the flue tile is sparse.
The price covers the cap itself, the mounting hardware, our labor, and a written guarantee on the installation. We quote it as a flat number before we start, in writing, and that’s the number on the invoice when we finish. Half the cap replacements we do in Marietta also uncover flue spalling or crown cracking, because a cap that has been failing for a while has been letting water into the flue tile. We’ll take photos and show you exactly what we’re seeing, and we will tell you plainly if the cap can wait while the crown gets patched first, or if both should be addressed the same day.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely do the diagnosis from the ground: check for visible rust, look for a missing cap with binoculars, and watch for water in the firebox after rain. But the actual replacement puts you on a roof, usually one that is steep enough to matter, working over a flue opening with hand tools in a position where a slip sends you over the edge or drops a steel cap onto whatever is below. This is not a repair we recommend as a weekend DIY, and most roof ladders in Cobb County max out at six feet of reach, which does not get you onto the flue anyway.
If your cap is failing, call us at (478) 796-8742 and we will look at it. The estimate is free. We’ll show you the exact cap we’re recommending, explain why it fits your flue, and put the complete price in writing before anything gets bolted down.
FAQs
A Copperfield cap with a stainless steel base typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Marietta’s humidity, while the older galvanized bases can start corroding in 6 to 8 years. Coastal exposure is not a factor here, but our summer storms and temperature swings are. Call (478) 796-8742 and we can inspect your cap and tell you what’s left in it.
Usually not. Once the mesh is torn or the base is rusted, patching simply delays the failure by a year or two while the underlying corrosion continues. The exception is a cap that has simply slipped or loosened, which we can refasten if the cap itself is still sound.
Most Copperfield cap replacements in Marietta take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder up to ladder down, assuming the flue is in good condition and the mounting surface is intact. If we need to patch the crown first, the job spans two visits with a day between for the sealant to cure.
We stock Copperfield-compatible single-flue caps in the most common Marietta flue sizes on every truck, along with mounting hardware and replacement mesh. Custom sizes and multi-flue units are usually in hand within a few business days. We also carry parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco for related chimney work.
