Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Sweep in Marietta: What to Know First
We provide independent Gelco chimney sweep service in Marietta, and most jobs are completed within a single visit of 60 to 90 minutes. The price for a standard Gelco fireplace sweep in Marietta runs between $189 and $289, depending on creosote buildup, access, and whether it’s a prefabricated unit or a masonry fireplace with a Gelco liner. Every quote is written before we touch a brush, so the number we hand you is the number you pay. This page is for Marietta homeowners with a Gelco fireplace, Gelco stove, or Gelco chimney liner who want the sweep done right and the price stated up front. Call (478) 796-8742 and you’ll get a live person, not a voicemail.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco makes solid chimney components, but every brand has its weak spots. Here’s what we actually see in Marietta homes, what causes it, and what we do about it.
- Cracked Gelco flue tiles in older masonry chimneys. Gelco clay flue liners are common in Marietta homes built from the 1960s through the 1980s. The failure we see most often is vertical cracking caused by rapid heating and cooling cycles. Georgia winters are mild, but a fireplace that goes from cold to a full blaze in ten minutes puts real thermal stress on clay. During a sweep, we inspect each tile joint and the tile face itself. Hairline cracks get documented with photos. If the crack is structural, you’ll see it on the camera, and we’ll talk honestly about whether a HeatShield resurfacing or a DuraFlex stainless liner is the right move. We never recommend a liner replacement from the driveway. You see the camera footage first.
- Glazed creosote buildup on Gelco stainless liners. Gelco stainless steel chimney liners do a good job, but they are not creosote proof. When homeowners burn unseasoned wood or run fires low and slow, the smoke cools before it exits, and creosote condenses on the liner wall. On a Gelco stainless liner this often shows up as a glossy, tar-like glaze in Stage 2 form. That glaze is a chimney fire waiting for a spark. Our sweep removes it with the right brush for the liner diameter plus a chemical treatment when the glaze is stubborn. We do not use wire brushes on Gelco stainless liners. Wire can scratch the surface and give creosote a better grip next time.
- Improperly installed Gelco caps and chase covers. We regularly find Gelco chimney caps and chase covers on Marietta homes that were installed without proper fastening or with the wrong size. A loose cap lets rain into the flue, which mixes with creosote to form an acidic sludge that eats at mortar joints and liner surfaces. A cap that’s the wrong size restricts draft. During every Gelco sweep we check the cap fit, the fasteners, and the mesh screen. If the cap is wrong, we tell you the correct Gelco replacement part number and the price before we order anything.
- Gelco prefab fireplace refractory panel deterioration. Gelco factory-built fireplaces use refractory panels that mimic brick. In Marietta’s humidity, these panels absorb moisture during the off-season. Fire the unit up in November and that trapped moisture expands as steam, causing surface spalling and cracks. We see this constantly in the neighborhoods off Whitlock Avenue and around East Cobb. Our sweep includes a close inspection of the refractory panels. Minor surface cracking is cosmetic. Panels with deep cracks or missing pieces need replacement, and we’ll show you exactly where and why before quoting the work.
- Blocked Gelco termination caps from tree debris and animal nests. Marietta has serious tree cover: oaks, pines, and sweetgums drop leaves, needles, and twigs year-round. Gelco termination caps with standard mesh do their job, but the mesh clogs. Once the mesh clogs, draft drops and smoke rolls back into the living room. We also pull squirrel and bird nests out of Gelco caps regularly in spring. The sweep clears the cap, but we also recommend a cap with a finer mesh or a top-sealing damper if it keeps happening. The fix should stop the problem, not just clean up after it.

Our Gelco Chimney Sweep Process
Here’s how a Gelco chimney sweep works when you call Ashby Chimney Marietta. No mysteries, no upsells.
- 1
Call and pricing. You call (478) 796-8742. We ask about your fireplace type, when it was last swept, and any symptoms you’ve noticed. You get a written price range before we schedule the visit.
- 2
Arrival and protection. Our technician arrives in uniform, on time, and lays down drop cloths from the door to the hearth. A HEPA vacuum with a sealed filter runs during the entire sweep so no soot ends up on your furniture.
- 3
Mechanical sweep of the Gelco flue. We run the correctly sized brush for your Gelco liner or flue tile. For Gelco stainless liners we use a poly or foam brush, not wire. Every pass is slow and deliberate, not rushed.
- 4
Camera check. After the sweep, we run a camera through the flue. You see the footage too. This is how you know the liner is clean and what, if anything, needs attention. No one should ask you to pay for a liner job without showing you the camera first.
- 5
Cleanup and written report. We leave the firebox cleaner than we found it. You get a written report with photos, plus a written quote for any recommended work. The quote price is the invoice price. Always.
- 6
The guarantee. Every repair we complete comes with a written guarantee under the Kingswell Guarantee. If it fails inside the guarantee period, we return at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s not a slogan. It’s the way we’ve worked since 2002.

Straight numbers so you’re not surprised. A basic Gelco fireplace sweep in Marietta costs between $189 and $289. If you have a Gelco insert or a wood stove, add $40 to $80 for a full appliance teardown and cleaning. Heavy glazed creosote removal adds $75 to $150 depending on how severe it is. If the camera shows cracked tiles or a damaged Gelco liner, we’ll quote repairs separately, in writing, after you’ve seen the footage. The cost on the quote is the cost on the invoice, no exceptions. Call (478) 796-8742 and we’ll give you an exact price for your Gelco setup before anyone sets foot in your home.
Why Marietta Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney Marietta for Gelco Work
Most chimney companies in Marietta will sweep any fireplace. Few of them know Gelco products specifically. Nathan Corliss and our crew do. We know which Gelco liners take a poly brush and which need a foam one. We know the refractory panel failure patterns in the prefab units that went into Marietta subdivisions in the 1990s and early 2000s. And we carry options: when a Gelco part is no longer available or backordered, we can bring in a DuraFlex liner or a HeatShield resurfacing treatment instead. That means you’re not stuck waiting six weeks for a backordered part. Each Ashby location is independently owned and operated under the Kingswell Guarantee. We’re not a national chain, and we don’t answer to a corporate office. We answer to the person whose living room we’re standing in. Tell you the price first, show you the work, put it in writing – that’s the whole job.
FAQs
No. Regular professional chimney sweeping is required by virtually all solid-fuel appliance manufacturer warranties, including Gelco’s. In fact, skipping annual sweeps is the fastest way to void a warranty. As an independent Gelco service provider, we document every sweep with photos and a written report, which gives you the maintenance records you need if a warranty claim comes up later.
Once a year, at minimum, if you burn more than a dozen fires per season. Marietta’s mild winters mean shorter burn seasons, but the humidity here causes creosote to cure differently, and even light use builds residue. If you burn unseasoned wood or fire the unit occasionally year-round, twice a year isn’t overdoing it. If the door glass is going black quickly or smoke is slow to draw, it’s past time.
It depends on what the camera shows. A single hairline crack in a Gelco clay tile is often repairable with a HeatShield resurfacing or a stainless steel liner. Multiple cracks, offset tiles, or spalling means serious structural concern, and we’ll tell you plainly. The camera footage is yours to review before any repair decision. We never declare a liner dead without showing you why.
When a Gelco part is available and the original part makes sense, we use it. When it’s a better long-term decision, we’ll recommend DuraFlex or Olympia or Copperfield components that meet or exceed the original spec. You get the trade names, the part numbers, and the prices in writing before we order anything. No mystery parts, no “whatever was in the van.”
Most sweeps are scheduled within a week, and we’ll give you a two-hour arrival window that we actually hit. If you need it sooner, call (478) 796-8742 and we’ll tell you what’s available. Phones are answered by a live person 24/7, so you’ll know before you hang up.
