Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Marietta Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Marietta typically runs between $450 and $900 installed, depending on crown condition and square footage. We stock HeatShield’s Cease-Fire crown sealant on our trucks and complete most crown repairs in a single visit. The way most Marietta homeowners find out their crown has failed is a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a flaking white residue on the brick just below the chimney cap after a hard Georgia rain.

Call (478) 796-8742

Your chimney crown is the concrete slab at the very top of the chimney, the part that sheds water away from the flue. When it cracks, water gets behind the brick and into the chase. HeatShield’s Cease-Fire specifically fills and seals those cracks before the damage spreads to the flue liner or the ceiling below. We’ve done enough of these in Marietta to tell you straight: a crown crack in February looks like a ceiling stain by April. Georgia’s freeze-thaw cycle is hard on concrete, and a crown exposed to a wet Cobb County winter is doing real work every single day.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

The crown repair product we use is HeatShield Cease-Fire, a cementitious sealant formulated specifically for chimney crowns and masonry caps. It’s not tied to one HeatShield liner series, which means if you have a HeatShield Cerfractory sealant system, a HeatShield liner joint repair, or a HeatShield Eco-Glo resurfacing job, the crown sealant is compatible across all of them. HeatShield designed Cease-Fire as the top-side complement to their liner systems, so it bonds cleanly to the same masonry surface their liners protect from below.

One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Marietta: HeatShield Cease-Fire is not a silicone or an elastomeric caulk. It’s a mineral-based compound that cures to the same hardness as the crown itself. If someone has previously “repaired” your crown with silicone or roofing tar, that material has to come off before the HeatShield product can bond. Silicone repels everything, including the repair meant to fix it. We see this in older Arbor Forest and Whitlock Heights chimneys where a previous owner went the hardware-store route. It all has to come off first.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for HeatShield crown products: there isn’t a meaningful aftermarket. Cease-Fire is the HeatShield product, and we use it because it’s designed to work with the rest of the HeatShield system. We also stock DuraFlex and Gelco products, but for crown work we reach for HeatShield because it’s purpose-built for exactly the crack pattern Georgia chimneys develop, and we don’t have to explain to a homeowner why we used a substitute if the repair fails two winters from now. Ashby Chimney Marietta is an independent service provider, not a HeatShield dealer or affiliate. We simply buy and install the product because it holds up in this climate.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • White chalky streaks on the brick below the cap. Water is dissolving the mortar and carrying salts down the face of the chimney. The crown is no longer shedding water, and every rain is pulling more mortar out of the stack.
  • A visible crack in the crown itself wider than a nickel. Concrete crowns shrink as they cure, and Georgia heat cycling opens those shrinkage cracks until they become water channels. If you can see it from the ground, it’s past time to address it.
  • Water stains on the ceiling around the chimney chase. This is the late-stage sign. The water entering through the crown crack has saturated the chase and is now showing up inside the house, usually on the second floor or wherever the chimney passes through the roof line near the back of the house.
  • Spalling or crumbling concrete on the crown surface. Freeze-thaw damage in a Marietta winter turns small cracks into chunks of missing concrete. If the crown is shedding pieces, the structural integrity of the cap is already compromised.
  • The top few rows of brick are darker than the rest of the stack after rain. That’s absorbed moisture, not shade. A functioning crown keeps those bricks dry; a failed crown lets them soak through every storm and then the water migrates down through the mortar joints.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Crown repair with HeatShield Cease-Fire in Marietta runs $450 to $900 installed for a standard single-flue chimney. The range depends on crown square footage, how much compromised material has to be chipped out before the sealant goes down, and how much access work the roof requires. A two-flue crown on a steep pitch off Roswell Road is going to run higher than a single-flue on a gentle slope in East Cobb. We price it the same way Nathan Corliss has priced every job since he started with this company: a written flat quote before any work begins. The number on the invoice matches the number on the quote. Every time.

Included in that price: removal of failed sealant and loose concrete, cleaning and preparation of the crown surface, application of HeatShield Cease-Fire at the correct thickness for our climate, and a final inspection. The Kingswell Guarantee covers this repair for 365 days. If the crown repair fails inside that year, we come back and re-do it at no charge. That’s the promise, in writing, on every job. No fine print where the warranty terms live.

Scope Installed Price Range
Single-flue crown, standard pitch $450 – $650
Single-flue crown, steep or difficult access $550 – $750
Two-flue crown, standard pitch $600 – $850
Two-flue crown, steep or difficult access $700 – $900

DIY or Call Us?

Crown work is roof work, and roof work on a chimney is a different animal than the rest of the roof. You’re not on a flat deck; you’re straddling a ridge line with a caulk gun in one hand and a trowel in the other, and the surface you’re repairing is the only thing keeping water out of your house. We don’t recommend DIY crown repair for the same reason we don’t recommend DIY flue liner work: a repair that fails quietly because you missed a hairline crack just means the real damage happens slower and costs more later.

What you can safely check from the ground: visible crown cracks from the yard, water stains on the ceiling near the chase, efflorescence on the brick below the cap. What we handle: the rest. And if what you’re seeing matches anything on the list above, call (478) 796-8742. We’ll send a background-checked technician, give you a written price before any work starts, and show you exactly what we found before we ever touch a brush. Tell you the price first, show you the work, put it in writing, that’s the whole job.
