Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in Marietta typically runs $285 – $520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate assembly, the control cable, or the full damper housing inside the flue. We keep the most common DuraFlex-compatible damper parts on the truck, so most Marietta jobs are done in a single 60 – 90 minute visit. Owners usually find the problem the first cold evening of fall: the lever won’t move, or it moves but the damper never fully closes, and heat keeps running up the chimney all winter.
We’re not affiliated with DuraFlex. We’re an independent chimney company in Marietta that installs and repairs their dampers because they hold up well and parts are easy to source honestly.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes dampers in a couple of configurations, and the part numbers matter more than the marketing name on the box. The ones we see most in Marietta are the DuraFlex top-sealing damper series and the throat-mounted damper assemblies that pair with DuraFlex aluminum or stainless liners. The aluminum-liner dampers use a lighter spring assembly, while the stainless-liner models use a stronger return spring rated for the extra weight of a cast damper plate.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: the older DuraFlex throat damper plates from the early 2000s have a slightly different pivot pin spacing than the current production run. If someone blindly orders a new plate based on “DuraFlex 6-inch” without measuring pin-to-pin, it won’t seat right. We can identify yours by measuring the frame opening and pin spacing, and checking the stamped model number on the damper control assembly. When OEM parts are backordered, we use quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield that match DuraFlex specs, and we tell you which one we’re installing before we touch anything.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The control lever has gone stiff or frozen. Soot and creosote film work into the pivot points over a few seasons in Georgia humidity, and the spring can’t overcome the friction anymore. This is the most common repair we do in Marietta homes with wood-burning fireplaces.
- The damper won’t stay open or closes on its own. That’s almost always the return spring losing tension or the cable slipping in the clamp block. It’s dangerous because it usually happens mid-fire, trapping smoke in the room.
- You can feel a draft even with the damper closed. This points to a warped damper plate or a worn gasket seat. In Marietta winters, that’s lost heat; in summer, it’s air-conditioned air escaping up the flue.
- The damper rattles loudly during wind. The linkage bushings are worn. The plate flutters in the wind and slaps against the frame, and no amount of tightening the handle fixes the root cause.
- The cable has visible kinks, fraying, or rust. Cable failure is next, and when the cable snaps, the damper is stuck wherever it was. In older Marietta homes with damp chimneys, rust on the cable is a sign the entire damper assembly is nearing replacement age.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Marietta homeowners, a full DuraFlex-compatible damper replacement runs $285 – $520 installed, with most jobs landing around $390. A simple cable and spring replacement sits at the lower end; a full damper assembly with new top plate and frame runs higher. What drives the cost: the size of your flue, whether the liner is aluminum or stainless, and whether the old mounting frame can be reused.
Every job gets a written price before we start, and that number matches the invoice. The installation includes new hardware, a written guarantee, and a photo of the finished work. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee we operate under: say the price, show up in the window, leave it cleaner, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: inspect the cable where it exits the housing for fraying, watch the plate for warping, and try moving the lever while the fireplace is cold. That tells you what kind of repair you’re likely facing, and it helps you talk through it when you call us.
Where DIY goes wrong: the damper spring is under tension, and the mounting brackets inside the flue are almost never accessible without removing the chimney cap or working from the firebox with specialized tools. We’ve seen more than one homeowner dislodge the top plate trying to reach it with a wrench on a rope. Nathan Corliss has pulled enough bent springs and cracked frames out of Marietta flues to know that a $50 part can turn into a $500 repair with one slip. If the damper isn’t moving, call us at (478) 796-8742 and let us look before you force anything.
FAQs
In our experience, a DuraFlex damper lasts 10 – 15 years in Marietta, though Georgia’s humid summers and occasional wind-driven rain storms shorten the lifespan on the control cable and spring. The damper plate itself often outlives the linkage. If your assembly is over 12 years old and the lever has been stiff for a season or two, you’re likely facing replacement rather than repair. Call (478) 796-8742 and we’ll tell you honestly which one you need.
Often yes, especially if the cable has slipped or the spring has lost tension but the plate isn’t warped. We carry replacement cables, springs, bushings, and linkage hardware for DuraFlex-compatible dampers on every Marietta service call. Repairs run $120 – $240 for most component replacements, which is well under the cost of a full assembly swap and usually adds several more years of service.
Most DuraFlex damper replacements in Marietta take 60 – 90 minutes. Top-sealing damper work on taller chimneys adds time for roof access and can take up to two hours. We schedule a precise arrival window and don’t double-book, so you’re not waiting around on a vague “sometime between 8 and 5.”
We stock the common DuraFlex-compatible damper cables, springs, plates, and linkage kits on our service trucks, along with parts from Gelco and HeatShield for liner-related repairs. When your part isn’t on hand, we order it and return once it arrives, with no trip charge for the second visit. Call (478) 796-8742 and we’ll check your model against our on-truck inventory while you’re on the phone.
If your DuraFlex damper won’t open, won’t close, or has been rattling in the wind all season, call us at (478) 796-8742. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, show you what we find, and put the guarantee in writing. Tell you the price first, show you the work, put it in writing – that’s the whole job.
