Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Marietta Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Marietta typically runs between $2,100 and $3,400 installed, depending on the liner diameter, height of the chimney, and how much of the old liner has to come out first. We stock DuraFlex-compatible replacement components on the truck and can usually complete the swap in a single visit. Most Marietta homeowners discover they need this work after a chimney sweep or inspection finds cracks, tears, or separation in the liner’s foil layers, or after a water heater or furnace starts venting poorly and a camera inspection shows why.

Ashby Chimney Marietta is an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we’ve installed and repaired their flexible aluminum liners for years. We know which parts fail first and which ones don’t.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

This page covers replacement parts and full liner replacements for DuraFlex aluminum flexible chimney liners in the sizes most common to Marietta homes: 4-inch and 5-inch for water heaters and furnaces, 6-inch and 7-inch for wood stoves and fireplace inserts, and occasionally 8-inch for larger appliances. DuraFlex makes two main product lines that show up around metro Atlanta: DuraFlex 316L, the stainless steel flexible liner used for gas, wood, and pellet appliances, and DuraFlex AL, the aluminum version rated for gas appliances only. The part numbers on your liner’s label will tell you which one you have. Look for a tag near the top connector plate or on the appliance itself.

The compatibility gotcha we see most often in Marietta: an aluminum DuraFlex liner being used on a wood-burning appliance. It holds up about as well as a paper coffee cup in a campfire. Aluminum is for gas only. If you’re burning wood through aluminum, the liner will fail early, and the replacement conversation includes moving to stainless. We also regularly see owners trying to replace just a connector on a liner that’s already corroded through in three places. Sometimes the right repair is a new connector. Sometimes the right repair is a new liner. We’ll show you the camera footage and let you decide.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Condensation stains or rust on the appliance connector. When a liner’s inner wall is compromised, moisture from combustion gases seeps back down and collects at the connection point. You’ll see orange-brown staining around the draft hood or the collar where the liner meets the appliance. It’s not cosmetic. It means the liner is done venting properly.
  • Soot or staining on the ceiling around the chimney chase. In Marietta two-story homes with enclosed chases, a torn liner can leak combustion gases into the chase before they reach the top. Soot marks, or a faint smoky smell in an upstairs room near the chase, is a real warning sign. Don’t wait on this one.
  • Water in the firebox or around the appliance base. A failed liner lets rainwater in, and in a Marietta summer thunderstorm that means water where you don’t want it. In winter, freeze-thaw cycles up and down the flue make small tears bigger. Georgia’s weather swings are hard on aluminum liners in ways Colorado’s dry cold isn’t.
  • The water heater or furnace keeps shutting off or drafting poorly. Backdrafting happens when the flue can’t pull gases up and out, often because the liner has collapsed inward or separated at a joint. If your gas appliance keeps tripping a rollout switch or you smell exhaust near the unit, it’s likely a liner issue.
  • Visible damage during an inspection. This is the one we find most often in Marietta: a homeowner books a chimney sweep, and our camera shows a liner that’s torn at the seams, perforated from corrosion, or crushed from a previous installation done without a pulling cone. Nobody had looked at it in years. The liner was failing quietly the whole time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Marietta single-family home, a DuraFlex-compatible flue liner replacement runs $2,100 to $3,400 installed. Here’s what drives the price. The liner diameter and length are the big ones; a 6-inch stainless liner for a wood stove runs more in material than a 4-inch aluminum liner for a water heater. Access matters too. A single-story ranch in East Cobb with a straight flue is faster to work on than a three-story home near Kennesaw Mountain with a steep roof pitch. And if the old liner has to be cut out in pieces, or a rusted connector plate has to be replaced, the labor goes up accordingly.

Every Ashby Chimney Marietta DuraFlex flue liner replacement includes removal and disposal of the old liner, the new liner assembly with connectors, installation, and a camera inspection afterward so you can see the completed work. You get a written price before anything starts and a written guarantee when it’s done. The Kingswell Guarantee covers this repair for a full year. If it fails inside that period, we return at no charge. That’s the whole point of the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things yourself. Check the visible connector at the appliance for rust or staining. Look at the exterior of the chimney chase for water damage. Take a photo of the liner label if you can reach it safely without getting on a ladder. That’s useful information when you call us. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a roof to inspect or pull a liner. Flexible liners are under tension during installation, and a liner that binds halfway down a flue while you’re on a steep Marietta rooftop is a recipe for a fall or a damaged liner, or both. We’ve had to fix homeowner-installed liners that were crushed during the pull because someone tried to save a few hundred dollars. The repair cost more than the original install would have.

If you know your DuraFlex liner needs replacing, or you want a camera inspection to find out, call (478) 796-8742. We’ll give you a straight answer and a written price. Nathan Corliss grew up in Los Angeles and learned his trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before chimney work pulled him into a career he has stuck with for going on twenty-two years. He and the crew have worked plenty of Marietta fireplaces, including older homes near Kennesaw Mountain where the flues are tight and the liners are tired. Tell you the price first, show you the work, put it in writing. That’s the whole job.
